Do you want to become a plumbing contractor in Colorado? If so, you must understand the requirements for obtaining a plumbing license. To be eligible for a plumbing license in Colorado, applicants must meet certain criteria determined by the state’s Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA). To obtain your plumbing license in Colorado, you need to follow the following steps:

    1. Complete an approved apprenticeship program

To become a plumbing contractor in Colorado, applicants must complete an approved apprenticeship program or have at least four years of commercial plumbing experience. The program must include at least 6,000 hours of supervised on-the-job training and 500 hours of related classroom instruction.

When selecting an apprenticeship program, it is important to ensure that the state licensing board approves it. An approved apprenticeship program can be found on the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment (CDLE) website.

    2. Pass the state licensing exam

You must pass a state licensing exam when you’re ready to take the next step toward getting your Colorado plumbing license. This test will assess your knowledge of plumbing practices, safety regulations, and technical skills. The test is a two-part exam that will focus on both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. The first part covers the technical aspects of plumbing, such as understanding and interpreting plumbing drawings, proper installation techniques, and safety regulations. The second part focuses on the business side of plumbing, including understanding contracts and regulations, customer service and communication skills, and other related topics.

    3. Apply for a plumbing license

Once you have successfully passed the state licensing exam, you can apply for a Colorado plumbing license. The application process is relatively straightforward, but you should have your paperwork in order before beginning the application process. It is important to note that you will be required to provide documentation of your experience, including verifiable proof of the number of hours and type of plumbing work you have completed.

The application process also requires applicants to pay a fee and submit fingerprints for a criminal background check. Once your application is approved, you will receive your Colorado plumbing license.

    4. Obtain the necessary insurance

All plumbing contractors must obtain liability and workers’ compensation insurance before applying for a Colorado plumbing license. Liability insurance covers any damages caused to a client’s property due to the negligence of the plumbing contractor. Workers’ compensation insurance covers medical costs and lost wages due to work-related injuries. In some cases, the client may require additional insurance coverage for their protection. Be sure to check with the client before beginning any job to ensure you have the appropriate coverage.

    5. Stay up to date on licensing requirements

Plumbing contractors need to stay current on their state’s licensing requirements. Licensing requirements can change over time, so it is important to stay informed of any new regulations or laws that may affect your business. Additionally, some states require plumbing contractors to take continuing education courses in order to maintain their licenses.

Following these steps is the only way to obtain a valid plumbing license in Colorado. You will not be eligible for a license if you do not meet the requirements. It is important to remember that a plumbing license in Colorado is valid only when it is renewed after every two years. You must renew your license yearly to remain in good standing with the state licensing board.
